NOPSI Hotel, the Central Business District’s newest hotel, gives locals a new hot spot to check out. After a multi-million dollar renovation, the hotel opened its doors on July 6, 2017. The hotel is housed in the building that was the former headquarters for New Orleans Public Service, Inc. (NOPSI).
When the news came that a new luxury hotel with a rooftop pool and bar was opening up in the CBD, I just had to check it out. Here’s the rundown on what to expect if you plan to check it out for yourself.
My first impression of the hotel is that it is gorgeous. The lobby is bright and spacious with vaulted ceilings adorned with decorative molding. There was a lively vibe as patrons mingled at the lobby bar, while a band entertained them with the sounds of traditional New Orleans jazz.

The purpose of my visit was to experience the rooftop bar, which seems to be a growing trend in the city. This rooftop bar — “Above the Grid” — is located on the ninth floor of the hotel. Locals are welcome to the rooftop bar every day after 4 p.m. Prior to 4 p.m., the rooftop is open only for hotel guests. I got there around 6:30 p.m., which was perfect timing. It wasn’t too crowded, but there were enough people present to create a buzz in the air.
Above the Grid
Above the Grid is a large rooftop with ample seating for a number of guests. There was seating at the bar, several high-top tables and sofas around the perimeter. On this particular evening, there were mostly professional locals and hotel executives at the bar. The executives were there to make sure you were having a good time, while also looking for feedback from customers. They seemed eager to hear a local’s perspective on the city’s newest establishment. The goal for Above the Grid is to offer a year-round hotspot for guests, visitors and locals alike with a unique view of the city’s skyline.
Pool at dusk
Ok, let’s talk about the view. It’s pretty much an 180-degree view from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome to the high-rises adorning the CBD. This particular night was a cool, clear night, so I was able to see the sunset just beyond the Dome.

Overall, I think the NOPSI Hotel is going to be a great addition to our downtown area. I’m looking forward to visiting this hotel again and experiencing it as an actual guest. There are plenty of other amenities to take advantage of such as the Cafe’ courtyard, the hotel’s restaurant — Public Service, and the unparalleled service that hotels of this caliber provide. I plan on doing that in the near future, and I’ll be sure to let you know about my experience.
