Beer and brats head back to Bayou St. John this fall. The area’s largest Oktoberfest, hosted by Deutsches Haus, returns to New Orleans for the first time in seven years, according to a news release.
This year’s German festival will take place where Deutsches Haus plans to build its “New Haus” at 1700 Moss Street, along Bayou St. John, across from City Park. For the past six years, the group’s annual Oktoberfest celebration has taken place in Kenner at Rivertown.
Festival-goers will get a chance to experience the German festival when it returns for three weekends in October: Oct. 6 and 7, Oct. 13 and 14 and Oct. 20 and 21. The festival will take place on Fridays from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Construction of the Oktoberfest portion of the “New Haus,” which includes utilities, site-work and a warehouse building, is scheduled to begin later this month and conclude in August, just in time for Oktoberfest this year. Plans for the official groundbreaking on the complete “New Haus” facility happens just before Oktoberfest this year. The scheduled completion is August 2018, in time to celebrate their 90th anniversary.
