Carnival is in full swing, and Friday kicks off the first full weekend of parades. Nearly a dozen parades roll across the area in New Orleans, St. Tammany and Jefferson Parish.
Krewe Bohème takes flight for its second year through the French Quarter at 7 p.m. on Friday. Tarriona “Tank” Ball from the local Grammy-nominated band Tank and the Bangas leads the walking parade as the Supreme Green Fairy — the krewe’s monarch. The artsy and whimsical parade features striking costumes and imaginative floats that embody the bohemian spirit. The 2020 theme is “The Soaring Twenties.”
On the Northshore, the Krewe of Bilge boat parade sets sail at noon on Saturday in Eden Isles with the theme “Fun Vacations.” Keep an eye out for FOX 8 anchor Kim Holden riding in the parade on the “Jungle Boogie” boat.
Then, the king and queen of Poseidon take over the streets of Slidell at 6 p.m. on Saturday. More than 750 riders on 30 floats will roll in the parade with the theme, “Louisiana Saturday Night.” The krewe says float themes feature “things we love about Louisiana” including football, seafood, festivals and Sportsman’s Paradise.
The irreverent Krewe du Vieux rolls at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday in the French Quarter. Seventeen subkrewes will each present their interpretation of the very risque 2020 theme. Many of the city’s top brass brands will also march in the satirical parade known for adult themes and political comedy. Krewedeluison follows immediately behind Krewe du Vieux.
One of Carnival’s newest krewes, the Krewe of Nefertiti, brings New Orleans East its first parade in decades. The all-female krewe takes its inaugural ride at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The parade features 14 floats and high school bands. Local entrepreneur Jesseca Dupart will ride as this year’s grand marshal.
Also, Jefferson Parish kicks off its first parade of the Carnival season in Metairie on Sunday. The Krewe of Little Rascals will roll down Veterans Memorial Boulevard at noon. Plus, there’s a double-header in Slidell starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday with the Slidellians followed by Perseus. Also, at 1 p.m., the Pearl River Lions Club rolls its community parade off Highway 59.
The tiny ‘tit Rex parade features more than 30 mini shoebox floats on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in the Marigny. The krewe honors our beloved FOX 8 anchor Nancy Parker with a special tribute as the parade’s queen, along with commemorative throws. Make sure you wave to one of our FOX 8 Morning Edition producers Christie Walton walking in the parade. The 2020 theme is “That’s A Little Much.”
