For more than a decade, the Mortuary Haunted Mansion has frightened thrill-seekers in the New Orleans area as one of the most popular Halloween attractions. Owner Jeff Borne says this year the haunted house explores a theme of phobias.
“For the haunted house attraction, we have a continuing story that furthers each year,” Borne said.
The building even has an interesting history and stories of paranormal activity that both add to its creepiness. The mansion sits in the perfect eerie location next to a cemetery and was even once a funeral home. Now, add the creepy clowns and horrifying zombies, and you really have a frightening scene.
Since the building first opened its doors in 2007, The Mortuary has been featured on the several ghost hunting shows and has grown into a New Orleans Halloween tradition.
The haunted house opens on Sept. 29 and continues tours initially on weekends, then picks up a more accelerated schedule nearing Halloween. Tours are offered Sept. 16, 22-23, 29-30, Oct. 6-8, 12-15, 19-22, 25-31, and Nov. 3-4. The box office begins selling tickets at 6:30 p.m., with tours from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $30 to $50.
In addition to the Halloween season, the venue operates year-round as a special event venue known as Mystere Mansion and an attraction that houses live escape games known as Mystere Escape Rooms.
