The first-ever Algiers Mardi Gras Festival will bring a new Carnival celebration to the West Bank. The free event will feature a full day of music, food and even a parade near the Algiers Courthouse on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Organizers hope the birth of this family festival will create an annual tradition for celebrating Mardi Gras in Algiers, New Orleans-style.

With the new event, the West Bank gets an earlier slice of Carnival this year. The Algiers Mardi Gras Festival launches before any major West Bank parades get rolling — including the Mystic Knights of Adonis on Feb. 15 and NOMTOC on Feb. 22.
Boasting an all-day party atmosphere, organizers say the community festival was developed “to enrich Algiers community businesses and to develop culture and tourism” for the Algiers area.
Festival-goers can also catch a community walking parade that will roll through the Algiers neighborhood, starting at 11 a.m. Nearly a dozen participants are scheduled for the walking parade including Landry Walker High School Marching Band, the Mohawk Hunters Mardi Gras Indians and the Westbank Steppers.
The parade starts near the festival grounds at the corner of Sequin Street and Delaronde Street. Then, the parade will proceed down Delaronde Street, turn right on Verret Street, turn left on Pelican Avenue, turn left on Olivier Street, then turn left on Petterson Road. Marchers will then continue down Patterson Road, which forks into Morgan Street and disband on the corner of Morgan Street and Delaronde Street.
The Brass-A-Holics headline the festival’s entertainment lineup. Other acts slated to perform include DJ Jubilee, the Marine Corps Reserve Band, the Algiers Brass Band and CASME.
Other features include on-site food vendors and arts and crafts booths.

Festival hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the parking lot at 225 Morgan Street. No coolers, outside food or drinks will be allowed.
The event is free and open to the public and accessible via ferry, bus, bike or on foot via a paved levee path from adjoining neighborhoods. Ferry service runs every 30 minutes from Canal Street to Old Algiers. Parking for individual vehicles is limited in the surrounding neighborhood.
