New Mid-City restaurant, Trep’s, transforms vintage auto garage into patio dining hotspot

One of Mid-City’s newest restaurants, Trep’s, becomes the latest addition to New Orleans’ growing outdoor dining scene.

The casual neighborhood restaurant, at 4327 Bienville Street, recently opened its doors in the buzzing Mid-City corridor gaining popularity for laid-back spots like Wrong Iron and Bayou Beer Garden.

Unlike some of the nearby neighborhood bars, Trep’s hopes to stand out from the crowd as a family-friendly and pet-friendly, full-service restaurant.

“Our goal is to be one of the go-to spots in Mid City both for our neighbors and our friends throughout New Orleans,” said Danny Akers, general manager and co-partner. “When tourism returns to New Orleans, we’ll welcome those customers, too; but we’re focused on growing our business for our neighbors.”

Once home to a vintage auto garage carrying the same name, Trep’s is now reimagined as a patio dining space while still honoring its roots.

The service station theme expands to clever names on Trep’s “global comfort food” menu of sandwiches, small-plates, tacos, snacks and salads developed by executive chef Jerry Mixon. Fun, tongue-in-cheek descriptors call appetizers “tune-ups,” while salads are called “alignments.”

Akers said the menu choices reflect the palate of the four partners responsible for the new venture. Akers joined forces with Mixon, David Carmi and another high-profile name, local celebrity entrepreneur and reality TV star Sidney Torres IV.

“The menu has everything from Thai chili wings, truffle fries, burgers, tacos made with roti bread instead of tortillas, some great salads and even banana pudding for dessert,” Akers said. “We are in the process of installing a raw bar for oyster service, too.”

Just in time for Saints season, the modern, outdoor space is crawling with a plethora of big-screen TVs, with a design reminiscent of the nearby Wrong Iron, another project involving Torres.

“Yes, Trep’s does share some elements with Wrong Iron, but also with Cafe Amelie,” Akers said. “What we’ve done is incorporate all the elements of our favorite outdoor restaurants in the design and our favorite food and drinks in the dining menus.”

Trep’s opening weekend leading up to the Saints season opener already saw a “phenomenal” response with sold-out reservations. Trep’s is now partnering with Open Table for an easier reservation process. Tables are also available for walk-in guests, too.

Initially, Trep’s will open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and close on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

“We’d love to extend our earlier to open earlier for breakfast and possibly a bit later on the weekends, and we hope to expand to seven days,” Akers said.
