This Carnival will be different in many ways, and king cake lovers can also expect some changes this season.
Those wildly-popular king cakes from Dong Phuong Bakery usually draws long lines of fans hoping to get their hands on the in-demand staple.
That’s why the Vietnamese bakery based in New Orleans East announced it won’t offer walk-up king cake sales this season during the coronavirus pandemic.
This year, Dong Phuong said they are only accepting online orders for curbside pickup at the bakery and express shipping.
In addition, Dong Phuong has significantly ramped up its list of “official resellers” for people who would rather not make the trek out to New Orleans East.
The bakery’s vendor list has expanded from 2020 and now includes nearly 20 locations in New Orleans, on the West Bank, North Shore, Metairie, Harahan, Chalmette, Baton Rouge and even stretches to Mississippi.
Here’s the complete list of vendors offering Dong Phuong king cakes starting Jan. 6:
Adams Street Grocery & Deli
Amore Bakery & Cafe
Bao Asian Market & Deli
Bo Tea Cafe
Bouree at Boucherie
Caffe Latte Da
Flavors Snoballs & Ice Cream
Joey Jeanfreau’s Meats
Mr. Bubbles Sandwich House
Nesbit’s Poeyfarre Street Market
Pharmacy in Diamondhead
Pho Cong Noodle & Grill
King cake prices via the Dong Phuong website range from $20 to $24. However, when you purchase from a vendor the price tag ranges from about $24 to $28, according to some retailers.
Many of the retailers are first come, first served and will not accept pre-orders due to high demand and limited quantities.
Some vendors, like Amore Bakery and Cafe in Gretna, will limit how many king cakes customers can purchase at a time.
One helpful tip for customers is to find out king cake delivery days and times from your nearest vendors in advance. A good rule is to call the retailer to find out availability in advance to avoid a blank trip.
The lightly-sweet, super-flaky king cake from Dong Phuong Bakery, based in New Orleans East, has surged in popularity throughout the area — especially since winning a James Beard award in 2018.
Dong Phuong started creating its iconic king cakes in 2008, known for its brioche dough with scalloped edges and cream cheese-based icing.
Owner Huong Tran and her husband immigrated to New Orleans from Vietnam and established the bakery more than 30 years ago.
