NEW ORLEANS, La. (NOLA WEEKEND) - With the future of Carnival 2022 looking bright, some bakeries are already turning their attention to king cake season.
One of New Orleans’ popular king cake bakeries, Dong Phuong Bakery, announced it’s already taking pre-orders for nationwide shipping and local pickup ahead of King’s Day.
After axing walk-up king cake sales last year, the Vietnamese bakery based in New Orleans East says it will resume selling a limited supply of king cakes for in-store walk-ins for 2022. Those quantities will be available on a first-come, first-served basis starting on Jan. 6, Dong Phuong Bakery posted on its Facebook page.
King cake lovers can schedule online orders for the popular item, available in original cinnamon, cream cheese, pecan, strawberry, coconut, almond varieties. Customers can pick up online orders anytime from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the selected pickup date.
The bakery will also offer flat shipping rates at $25 for two-day shipping and $40 for next-day shipping.
Those wildly-popular king cakes usually draw long lines of fans hoping to get their hands on the in-demand staple. However, this year, Dong Phuong Bakery says they’re facing supply chain issues and labor shortages similar to many other industries.
“There are a few key ingredients that we have yet to secure through the season,” a spokesperson said via e-mail. “So I guess, we are just hoping to maintain production level due to these new challenges.”
In previous years, Dong Phuong has partnered with local businesses as official king cake resellers for people who would rather not make the trek out to New Orleans East.
The bakery says they are currently finalizing the list of king cake distributors for 2022, and they plan to release that list next week.
The lightly-sweet, super-flaky king cake from Dong Phuong Bakery has surged in popularity throughout the area — especially since winning a James Beard award in 2018.
Dong Phuong started creating its iconic king cakes in 2008, known for its brioche dough with scalloped edges and cream cheese-based icing.
Owner Huong Tran and her husband immigrated to New Orleans from Vietnam and established the bakery more than 30 years ago.
