NEW ORLEANS (NOLA WEEKEND) - New Orleans’ Downtown Development District will kick off the holiday season downtown with the annual Canal Street lighting event at 5:30 p.m. at Canal Place on Nov. 22.
The lighting event, a New Orleans tradition, will flip the switch on a million lights from South Claiborne Avenue to the Mississippi River for the duration of the holiday season at the Canal Place plaza. During the event, organizers will simultaneously light a 40-foot tree in Spanish Plaza at the Riverwalk Outlets.
Each year, the Lighting of Canal Street marks the beginning of the holiday season in New Orleans. This year, numerous holiday events will happen downtown, including the first-ever Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade produced by Kern Studios. The parade rolls at 3 p.m. on Dec. 3.
Organizers call the new parade the “first-of-its-kind for New Orleans” and will feature several high-flying helium balloons for the first time in the city. The parade, produced by Kern Studios, will also feature custom-designed holiday-themed floats that include animatronic props, intelligent lighting systems, special effects and audio systems.
Other holiday events include Movies Under the Stars at Spanish Plaza on Dec. 10 and Dec. 17 and NOLA ChristmasFest happening on Dec. 17 - 22 and Dec. 25 - 30.
