Big Easy Rollergirls open season with double header

The Big Easy Rollergirls, New Orleans’ women’s flat track roller derby league, will kick off its 2018 season by hosting a double header event on Saturday, April 28 at the Lakefront Arena.

The action begins at 5 p.m. when the Big Easy Rollergirls’ Second Line faces the Beach Brawl Sk8r Dolls, a league based out of Ft. Walton Beach. Fla.

The second game of the evening begins at 7 p.m. when the Big Easy Rollergirls’ All-Stars will face Panhandle United Roller Derby in a game sanctioned by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, or WFTDA.

“Big Easy Rollergirls games are affordable family-friendly fun,” said Aaron “PR Mageddon” Looney, league announcer and public relations chair. “We have fans of all ages who come out to watch the great athletic competition on the track. Our skaters, officials and volunteers work very hard and are proud to represent New Orleans as a part of the fastest growing sport in the world. We hope to see many of our fellow New Orleanians cheering us on in the Lakefront Arena this season.”

Proceeds from this event will benefit Hagar’s House, A Sanctuary for Women and Children in New Orleans. Located at 3401 Canal Street, Hagar’s House is an organization under the First Grace Community Alliance, or FGCA, umbrella. The mission of FGCA is to work with and for people in need – especially women and their children – by meeting food, housing and other emergency needs, while simultaneously challenging systemic poverty in the Greater New Orleans area.
