As more businesses reopen during Phase One, new signs of life appear in the French Quarter once again. One of the latest re-openings will breathe life back into Café du Monde’s iconic French Market location.
The world-famous French Market coffee stand is set to reopen at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 22, according to Jay Roman, president of Café du Monde.
For two months, scenes of the shuttered coffee stand against the backdrop of a lifeless French Quarter were eerily reminiscent of the days after Hurricane Katrina.
Similar to after Katrina, Roman said he hopes Café du Monde’s re-opening serves as a beacon for the city’s resilience in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“A lot of people pointed to our opening as a sign that the City was coming back. We hope that our reopening this time is viewed the same way. There is no question in our mind that the French Quarter will rebound just as it did after Katrina,” Roman said.
After Café du Monde’s flagship location reopens on Friday, service will begin with take-out only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
“Our employees will wear masks, wash hands frequently, be prepared to wipe and sanitize tables after each use,” Roman said. “We, will, of course, embrace social distancing both in the queue for beignets, as well as in our table placement.”
Eventually, Café du Monde plans to resume table service with the implementation of Phase Two.
“As with everything else these days these times are fluid,” Roman said. “Just as we did after Katrina we intend to extend those hours until we get back to our normal 24 hours.”
During the temporarily closure, Roman said he has been renovating the building, including repairs to a broken drain line. Café du Monde’s City Park location recently reopened for takeout, with walk-up service daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Now, fans can once again grab beignets and cafe au lait from the historic French Quarter location, just in time for Memorial Day weekend.
“We are very excited about our reopening and can’t wait to visit with all of our local customers and hear their stories,” Roman said.
Cafe du Monde’s original French Market coffee stand is located at 800 Decatur Street.
