Carnival Kickoff: Parades rolling on Twelfth Night, Jan. 6

This Sunday is the official start of Carnival.

New Orleans kicks off the start of Carnival on Twelfth Night, falling on Sunday, Jan. 6.

A new krewe will roll on the city’s first official night of the Carnival season. The Funky Uptown Krewe will parade following the Phunny Phorty Phellows on the St. Charles streetcar line.

The Krewe’s ride will feature DJ Mannie Fresh, who will be performing a full DJ set on the St. Charles streetcar.

The Funky Uptown Krewe will depart from Bourrée at Boucherie (1510 S. Carrolton Ave.) at 7:05 p.m. and ride the St. Charles streetcar to Canal St. then back to Fat Harry’s (4330 St. Charles Ave.).

The Krewe’s signature throws will include professionally packaged CDs and mixtapes featuring some of New Orleans’ best artists, including: Hot 8 Brass Band, Big Sam’s Funky Nation and Cowboy Mouth.
