Celebrate Cinco de Mayo: Where to find block parties, food and drink specials, celebrations

Mexican restaurants and bars across the New Orleans area host Cinco de Mayo parties to celebrate the Mexican holiday, which will see some big competition with the date falling on the second Jazz Fest weekend. Even still, locals can expect several Mexican hot spots to pull out all the stops. We even found a new Cinco de Mayo Fest in Kenner.

Whether you’re trying to nail down one spot in your neighborhood or hop around to a couple of events, turn to our list of Cinco de Mayo festivities you can enjoy around the area.

Drinko De Mayo – Saturday, May 4 from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. | Kenner

Get ready to kick off Cinco De Mayo a day early with Porch and Patio in Kenner. Drink and food specials will be in full effect, including $4 margaritas, $3 tequila, and $3 tacos. There will also be live music provided by Burnside Flashers starting at 3 p.m., followed by The Band Epic at 7 p.m.

Cinco de Mayo at the Velvet Cactus – Sunday, May 5 from 11 a.m. to 1o p.m. | Lakeview

The Velvet Cactus hosts a Cinco de Mayo celebration with a full-day of food, music and drinks. The lineup included performances from bands and a DJ. There will be a $5 cover starting at 3 p.m.

Los Jefes Grill Cinco de Mayo Block Party –  Sunday, May 5 from noon until 11 p.m. | Metairie

Hit up this block party at the popular Fat City restaurant starting at noon. Los Jefes pulls out all the stops for their annual Cinco de Mayo event with fun for the whole family including face painting, photo booths and a taco eating contest. DJ Emotion will spin at the event, and the restaurant will offer free tequila shots from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Los Jefes encourages people to RSVP a table ahead of time, which includes seating for 8 and a complimentary bottle of Avion Tequila. Table prices are $100.

Cinco de Mayo Festival at El Paso Metairie – Sunday, May 5 from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. | Metairie

If you’re looking for a family-friendly vibe, kick off your Cinco de Mayo at El Paso in Metairie. The spot hosts a fiesta starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Live music, entertainment, delicious Mexican food, and tasty beverages are all part of the fun for the whole family. The event features live entertainment from bands and DJs throughout the day.

Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Carretta’s Grill – Sunday, May 5 from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. | Slidell

Over on the North Shore, Carretta’s Grill in Slidell hosts one of the biggest celebrations in town. Enjoy great food and drinks outdoors, a taco truck, and live music all day, including a performance from Supercharger from at 3 p.m. Plus, get free giveaways and some awesome margaritas.

Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Carretta’s Grill – Saturday, May 5 starting at 11 a.m. | Metairie

All-day festivities kick off at Carretta’s Grill Metairie location starting at 11 a.m. The family-friendly event features free giveaways, outdoor bars, taco trucks and Corona and Jose Cuervo girls. Live music from Grupo Sensacion from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Mariachi Jalisco from 11 a.m. to noon and 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Felipe’s Taqueria Cinco de Mayo Fiesta – Sunday, May 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Mid-City location

The big celebration at Felipe’s Mid-City location returns this year. The fiesta will transcend from inside the restaurant to an outdoor courtyard filled with traditional experiences that include live music and drink stations featuring authentic margaritas, cocktails and cervezas. The party will kick off at 6 p.m., with live performances from the Fermin Salsa Band and Merengue4-Four.

Felipe’s Taqueria Cinco de Mayo Fiesta – Saturday, May 5 starting at 11 a.m. | French Quarter and Uptown locations

Felipe’s Uptown and French Quarter locations will also have a festive lineup of performances and food and drink specials. Location opens at 11 a.m. Will Dickerson performs at the French Quarter location from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. At the Uptown location, The Gaunga Dyns perform from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Le Bon Temps perform from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Cinco El Gato VIP Fiesta – Saturday, May 5 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. | Lakeview

El Gato Nego hosts a VIP Fiesta in the parking lot. The event features all you can eat tacos with open bar. Merengue and salsa band Grupo Revelacion performs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and traditional mariachi by Mariachi Jalisco from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. VIP tickets are $85 per person.

Cinco de Mayo Festival at El Paso Mexican Grill – Sunday, May 5 from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. | Slidell

On the North Shore, join a fun-filled Cinco de Mayo celebration with live music entertainment, family fun and margarita specials at El Paso Mexican Restaurant in Slidell. The music line up includes DJs, Quarter Notes Live and music by Witness. Family fun includes a piñata, face painting and Paso Fino Horse.

Cinco de Mayo at Arana y Cantina – Saturday, May 5 | Irish Channel

Arana will have live music, giveaways, tastings and more to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The spot feature live music by Salvatore Geloso from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The outdoor bar opens from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will serve specialty cocktails. Hit the Piñata and win some great prizes. Plus, Arana will offer in-store and online giveaways. In addition, Arana offers happy hour and weekend specials such as bottomless Margaritas on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Lucy’s Cinco-Mania + Derby Day Block Party – Saturday, May 5 starting at noon | Central Business District

Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar celebrates Cinco de Mayo and Kentucky Derby with a block party. They will show all Kentucky Derby pre-race festivities in the attic starting at noon, as well as the race. Lucy’s will also serve 5 cent margaritas for five minutes starting at 5 p.m. The spot will offer drink and food specials and a DJ will be on site.

Casa Borrega’s Cinco de Mayo Street Party  – Sunday, May 5 from 4 p.m. until midnight| Central City

Break out your dancing shoes for a Cinco de Mayo fiesta at Casa Borrega. The cute Central City restaurant and bar features Margaritas, mezcal, and street food — plus a street party with performances from La Tranka, Luna Mora, and Javier Gutierrez Trio.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta & Mexican Crawfish Boil – Saturday, May 5 starting at 10 a.m. | Leonidas

El Taco Loco says they’re boiling crawfish Mexican style for Cinco de Mayo along with authentic cuisine as well. Guests can also enjoy music and other surprises. Several $5 food and drink specials are on tap including $5 margaritas on the rocks, 3 tacos for $5, $5 10-inch burrito and more.

Cinco de Mayo at Johnny Sanchez – Saturday, May 5 | Central Business District

At Johhny Sanchez, Rock out with DJ Lady B of NOLA Fleaux on Cinco De Mayo from 9 p.m. to midnight — happy hour priced drinks and Latin dance music! No cover.

El Paso Mexican Grill Cinco de Mayo Festival – Saturday, May 5 | Algiers

Party with friends and family on the West Bank at El Paso Mexican Grill in Algiers. There will be live music entertainment, delicious Mexican food, tasty beverages, and family fun for everyone. Entertainment includes a live DJ all day, a piñata, face painting and a performance from The Echo Monsters at 6 p.m. Free admission.

Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Carretta’s Grill – Sunday, May 5 starting at 11 a.m. | Harahan

Carreta’s in Harahan brings back their Cinco De Mayo event from last year, featuring free giveaways and live music. The Topcats will provide the music, you just need to bring yourself.

Superior Grill New Orleans – Saturday, May 5 | Touro

Superior Grill has nixed the popular block party that has made them the Cinco de Mayo hot spot over the years. However, the restaurant says they will offer their regular happy hour specials.

Cinco de Mayo at Nacho Mama’s – Friday, May 5 from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. | Elmwood

Nacho Mama hosts its annual hot pepper eating contest. The restaurant will offer Corona beer bucket specials, and the Hornitos Tequila shot girls will be passing samples around. DJ Dave will be spinning on the patio.
