Two Chewbacchus overlords gave us a history lesson on this galactic krewe!
The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus returns for its 10th year in 2020 with a new, extended route along the streets of the Bywater, Faubourg Marigny, and French Quarter at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1.
The theme of Chewbacchus X is “The Roar of the Wookiee,” which pays homage to the “Sacred Drunken Wookiee,” as well as the krewe’s “Emperor for Eternity,” Peter Mayhew (best known for his role as Chewbacca in “Star Wars,” and who passed away on April 30, 2019).
This year, the parade features a new route, which begins on Chartres Street at Homer Plessy Way, includes stretches of St. Claude Avenue, Elysian Fields Avenue, and Frenchmen Street, with its longest stretch along Decatur Street, before it turns left on Conti Street, where it will disband.
The Chewbacchanal, immediately following the parade at 10 p.m., takes place at The Fillmore at Harrah’s New Orleans.
The Chewbacchanal is open to the public and general admission tickets are $20. There will also be a limited-space VIP option ($60 for members of Chewbacchus and $80 for non-members), that includes a private room with an open bar serving specialty drinks and food, along with VIP-only tables and chairs in the main room.
All party goers will enjoy live music by Mannie Fresh along with various DJs throughout the night. The Chewbacchanal ends at 1 a.m.
Royalty this year will be selected from a group of ultra-enthusiastic fans of the parade. Participating in the quest to be named king or queen were people selected during the 2019 parade who showed outstanding appreciation for the krewe, through their costumes and actions. These 42—“Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything”—individuals have been competing in various quests throughout the year and whoever accumulated the most points will be crowned the victor and will rule over the krewe’s galaxy of nerds for the season.
Chewbacchus prides itself on diversity and inclusivity within all its subkrewes, which include The Leijorettes, Women of Wakanda, Avatarlicious, All Wonder Women Walking Krewe, the Mystic Krewe of P.U.E.W.C., Queer Eye for the Sci-Fi, and many more.
“The whole idea behind Chewbacchus is that we are celebrating our current mythology,” Chewbacchus overlord Aryanna Gamble said. “Chewbacchus is not just a sci-fi parade; it’s an all-nerdom, all-fandom parade.”
One of the most popular aspects of the Chewbacchus parade are the handmade throws, the most iconic of which are the bandoliers and bando blocks (the ammunition strap and ammo worn by Chewbacca), which are created and handed out by members along the route. Members spend all year making special throws, which include magnets, jewelry, figurines, and so much more.
Chewbacchus does some of the most direct and ground-breaking work towards building inclusion of any group in the Milky Way Galaxy. This includes providing costumes, throws, and other support for the Stomp Troopers, a stormtrooper-based sub-krewe for children with autism and other special needs, and the 42nd Mobile Squadron, a sub-krewe for adults and children with limited mobility.
