Many will celebrate Cinco de Mayo, on Tuesday, May 5, quite differently this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Not to mention, the Mexican holiday also falls on Taco Tuesday this year — which is like salt in an open wound instead of around the rim of your favorite restaurant’s margarita.
With dining rooms still closed and stay-at-home orders still in place, several New Orleans area restaurants are stepping up with options to help bring the fiesta to your living room.

Many restaurants are offering take-out deals on family-style to-go meals and margaritas.
Restaurants with relaxed restrictions in Jefferson Parish, on the North Shore and other areas are taking advantage of outdoor patio dining.
Plus, at least one restaurant, Felipe’s Taqueria, gets creative with a virtual, “Cyber Cinco de Mayo” celebration for its most celebrated event of the year.
The annual holiday also marks a good time to support local businesses still trying to survive.

Felipe’s live virtual party will feature performances during a four-hour event starting at 6 p.m. CST.
Expect performances by Jose Fermín, Will Dickerson, Mariachi Juarez International, Elio Piedra, Bailanow and Matt Freed. The acts will help bring life to at-home Cinco de Mayo celebrations with Mariachi, Salsa, Pop, Rock, Merengue, Reggaetón and Bachata.
The restaurant will serve to-go orders of Felipe’s Family Meal and $30 half gallon or $60 gallons of hand-squeezed margaritas to accompany the livestreamed fiesta.

In Central City, Casa Borrega starts the party early with a special Cinco de Mayo menu now through Tuesday, May 5. The restaurant will make things lively with live music in the parking lot while customers pick up curbside — while practicing social distancing, of course. Casa Borrega will open until 7 p.m. on Cinco de Mayo.

Fajitas, tacos and margaritas — oh yes! You can have a Mexican picnic during your own at-home Cinco de Mayo celebration.
Velvet Cactus recently re-opened its doors after temporarily closing in March due to COVID-19. Now, the Lakeview restaurant is taking online to-go orders, and will open for Cinco de Mayo on Tuesday from noon to 8:30 p.m. After that, the new hours of operation are Wednesday and Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday to Sunday from noon to 8:30 p.m.
Los Jefes Grill
Los Jefes Grill wants to help you bring Cinco de Mayo home. You can pre-order Cinco Family Boxes from the Metairie restaurant for at-home fiestas. The boxes includes an option of burritos, quesadillas or tacos. It also comes with queso and salsa with chips. Plus, you can toast at home with two Avion margaritas. The box serves two people for $35.
El Paso Mexican Grill
Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, El Paso Mexican Grill locations in Metairie, Marrero, Chalmette, Mandeville and Slidell launch outdoor patio seating without table service. Many El Paso locations will also offer fiesta specials for stay-at-home celebrations.
El Paso’s Metairie location will offer two for one small or medium house margaritas and $2 tacos from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on May 5. The LaPlace location will offer margarita specials all day. In Mandeville, customers can get $7.99 house margaritas and family style to-go orders. The Chalmette location will offer combo dinner specials and margarita specials.

Barracuda wants to help you Cinco in Place with a Cinco party pre-order for pick-up via contactless drive-thru on May 5. The taco stand will offer taco or enchilada party packs, happy hour kits, margarita jugs and other a la carte items for purchase.

While owners of the Elmwood restaurant say the restaurant’s future after the pandemic is uncertain, Nacho Mama’s will host a delivery-only pop-up for Cinco de Mayo. Fans can order family-style chips and dips, margaritas and tamales to make a meal at home.

Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, Ideal Market brings back its $1 Taco Tuesday special. The Latin grocery store will offer $1 carnitas tacos at all locations this Tuesday and every following Tuesday.
Carretta’s Grill takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to the current climate with its “Cinco De Quarantin-O” event. They will keep the restaurant’s Cinco de Mayo traditions alive while social distancing.
The restaurant, with locations in Metairie and Harahan, will offer free giveaways and host a “This is how we Cinco” contest on social media.

La Carretta on Magazine Street recently re-opened its doors after temporarily closing due to COVID-19. The restaurant is ripe and ready for Cinco de Mayo with a Cinco de Mayo kit.

Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux
Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux says its celebrating big this Cinco de Mayo with a special bundle at participating locations. On Tuesday, May 5, guests can enjoy eight Boom Boom Shrimp Tacos, Cajun Queseaux with Tortilla Chips and a gallon of frozen margarita (*dependent on location) or a 6-pack of bottled Corona for $30. Guests can place their order through call-in or curbside.
The fast food chain announced that it will offer an At Home Taco Bar at participating restaurants nationwide. For a limited time, the kits can be delivered or picked up via contactless drive-thru.
The fast food chain’s new meal kits comes with enough food to feed a family of six for $25. The kit comes with staple Taco Bell ingredients packed and sealed including including flour tortillas, crunchy taco shells, nacho chips, seasoned beef, shredded lettuce, nacho cheese sauce and hot sauce packets.
