Drew Brees and chef John Folse announce plans to team up for a new North Shore restaurant if a proposed casino resort lands in St. Tammany Parish.
The new project, the Drew Brees and John Folse Steakhouse, is one of seven restaurants slated for the proposed Camellia Bay Resort and Casino, developers announced in a release.
Peninsula Pacific Entertainment hopes to build the $325 million casino and entertainment destination near I-10 at the foot of the Twin Span in the Slidell area.
In the latest development, a district court judge in Covington has scheduled a Dec. 3 hearing to determine whether the controversial Slidell casino measure can remain on the ballot for the Dec. 11 election in St. Tammany Parish. Judge John Keller previously ruled that the legality of the measure should be determined after voters cast ballots on Dec. 11. But his decision was reversed by an appellate court, which remanded the matter back to Keller’s courtroom with orders to decide the matter before the election.
Brees, who retired from the Saints last year and now works as a sports analyst, said he’s “excited” about the new team being assembled to create this restaurant concept.
“We want everyone to come and experience the exceptionally high standard we have for our food here in Southeast Louisiana, with an added touch of my personal history playing for a region I love so much,” Brees said in a statement.
Folse, a Louisiana culinary icon, known for his restaurants and television appearances, founded the John Folse Culinary Institute at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux.
The proposed casino has been met with opposition from many parish citizens and officials, who say the casino will only enable gambling addiction, human trafficking, among other crime concerns. But others say it will help the economy and create jobs.
If approved, the land-based resort would include a hotel, convention center, ballrooms, casino gaming, live music venues, green space for outdoor community events, a luxury spa, a new marina, multiple pools, a lazy river and seven restaurants, developers said in a release.
