When cyclists participating in Get Up and Ride Bike Night roll through local neighborhoods, a continuous stream of dazzling neon lights becomes a familiar sight. Cyclists gather for the weekly meet up every Tuesday at the Hi Ho Lounge around 7:30 p.m.
The three-hour ride starting in the Marigny journeys to the Superdome, then makes a return trip with pit stops along the way.
“Just jump in,” one participant explains in the video.
The music-guided, social bike ride is free. Just come along with your bike. If you don’t own your own bike, the group already suggests a place to rent on the Nola Social Ride page. In addition to the weekly Tuesday night ride, the page also features other social ride events for cyclists to join.
If you pay any attention to social media or the group’s Instagram page, the number of riders seem to grow each week. One of the participants in this video guesses about 300 cyclists came along for the ride.
You can send the group your contact information to stay in the loop. A link to a participant contact form appears on the Get Up and Ride Instagram page.
If you plan to jump in, here are a few official rules the group outlines on their Instagram page to prepare you for your first ride:
- Only pre-designated crew members are allowed to pass the leader.
- When directed, move to the bike lane as swiftly as possible.
- By law: Every bike must have at least one headlight and one back light.
- Use the meet-up time to check your bike for potential safety concerns (tire pressure, lugs, etc.).
- Get Up N Ride!
