Give Some New Orleans Flavor: Gift Guide

Olive Salad is a popular New Orleans-themed gift. Here's how to make it yourself.

Have a friend or relative that can't get enough New Orleans? Here are some ideas for sharing a taste of the city via New Orleans-themed gifts.

There are some beautiful styles and offerings from local jewelers in the New Orleans area. Mignon Faget is well known here and elsewhere, and other smaller jewelry operations like Heather Elizabeth and Cristy Cali offer a Crescent City aesthetic all their own.

Local artists who provide the city some of its color have options available for home consumers. Some of the more well-known artists like Terrance Osborne have original pieces that can get pricey, but counter that with affordable prints.

Simon is a local favorite who doesn’t break the bank. And several local art markets can provide affordable gifts too.

Beignets are absolutely New Orleans, and all that powdered sugar probably qualifies them as a sweet. Sadly, they may not hold up all that well to make themselves a realistic option for gift-giving. The solution to that? Beignet mix.

Praline lovers have lots of options including standard-bearer Aunt Sally’s. And local chocolate is always an option too, thanks to great spots like Sucre and Blue Frog. (Our friends at Blue Frog have some fun DIY ideas too!)

New Orleans is well known for bold, flavorful food. And hot sauce is a part of that. Local favorites include Crystal and Tabasco.

Olive salad is another local staple. Here’s how to make it yourself if you’re feeling creative.

Living in New Orleans can make a person particular about his or her coffee. From CDM to Community, there are tons of favorites to choose from.

Shipping beer isn’t easy, but for locals, nearby breweries like Nola and Urban South produce some delicious offerings (and here’s a handy tasting guide).

Gift cards to local establishments make for fabulous gifts (if the gift receiver can easily redeem them, that is!). Added bonus: Several restaurants and tours offer Black Friday deals.

Finally, consider donating on someone’s behalf.  New Orleans-specific causes that resonate with folks with an affinity for the city include WWOZ Radio and Team Gleason.
