Gnarly Barley, Southeastern Louisiana University Team Up for “Lion Up” Beer

Something new for Southeastern Louisiana University’s Lion fans brews in Hammond. The University announced a partnership with Gnarly Barley Brewery to launch a new beer, just in time for football season.

The pair teams up to release “Lion Up American Wheat Ale” during a party at the Hammond brewery on Aug. 5. Then, the beer will hit shelves at locations the following week. Fans can find the beer at restaurants, stores and entertainment venues across the North Shore, including the University’s Strawberry Stadium on Lion home game days.

SLU becomes the second university near the New Orleans area to hop on the beer trend. Tulane University recently announced a partnership with NOLA Brewery earlier this month.

The partnership between SLU alumni-owned Gnarly Barley Brewery and Southeastern has resulted in a crisp American wheat ale that is light bodied and easy to drink. According to Gnarly Barley co-founder Zac Caramonta, beer enthusiasts can expect a refreshing wheat malt flavor and crisp floral hop notes.

“It’s light bodied and easy to drink – perfect for Lion tailgating,” Caramonta said.

Caramonta along with his wife Cari, who is also a co-founder, beam with excitement to partner with their alma mater.

“Being that the university has been such a huge part of our lives since we both started in the early 2000s and met while students there, we feel this is an amazing opportunity for us to team up with Southeastern,” Caramonta said.

Erin Cowser, the University’s executive director of public and governmental affairs, said the beer will be brewed exclusively during fall semesters and sold in 12 oz. recyclable cans only, under a licensing agreement.

A portion of the proceeds of the new craft beer’s sales will be dedicated to student alcohol abuse prevention efforts on campus, Cowser added.
