Who has the best chicken sandwich? Popeyes or Chick-fil-A? The chicken sandwich debate has recently been wrecking our brains.
Well, if you haven’t tried the Popeyes’ chicken sandwich, you’re out of luck…for now! The fast food chain recently claimed to “run out” of the newly-added chicken sandwich.
However, fried chicken sandwiches are pretty common in New Orleans. It’s a good time to put the debate to rest for a bit and try some of the best chicken sandwiches New Orleans has to offer.
Here’s a list of fried chicken sandwiches to try around New Orleans.
Picnic Provisions & Whiskey
741 State Street, New Orleans
Sink your teeth into this skyscraper of a chicken sandwich from Picnic Provisions & Whiskey. The casual, picnic-inspired restaurant serves up a Crawfish Boil Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich. The double-decker comes double stacked with light and dark meat, mirliton dill pickles and lemony white miso mayo, on a toasted sesame bun, and topped with Crystal Hot Sauce pulp. While you’re there you can also test out the Chargrilled Naked Chicken Sandwich.
Blue Oak BBQ
900 North Carrollton Avenue, New Orleans
Sorry in advance. This fan favorite is only available on Tuesdays, but that doesn’t stop chicken lovers from rushing Blue Oak BBQ to score this spicy chicken sandwich. The juicy, fried spicy chicken with pickles comes dripping with creamy sauce on a sesame seed bun. Blue Oak BBQ’s sandwich also took the crown for “Best Fried Chicken Sandwich” at the 2018 National Fried Chicken Festival. If you can’t make it on Tuesday, Blue Oak BBQ also allows guests to pre-order spicy chicken biscuits to pick up on Sunday mornings starting Sept. 8.
611 O’Keefe Avenue, New Orleans
James Beard award-winning chef Kelly Fields also dishes out a fried chicken sandwich at Willa Jean. Bite into a huge hunk of chicken breast with a bright Serrano slaw on a Hawaiian roll. It’s available for lunch and dinner. You can also get the fried chicken and Tobasco honey biscuit during brunch. Enjoy it with a glass of froze.
845 North Carrollton Avenue, New Orleans
Chef Issac Toups, the local connoisseur of all things meat, serves a killer Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich at his Mid-City staple Toups Meatery. Snatch it up on a ciabatta-style bun with gruyere cheese and house-cured ham. It’s only available during lunch.
This sandwich from District Donuts comes dripping with so many layers of flavors. A crispy fried chicken breast comes nestled between layers of candied jalapeño, buttermilk garlic slaw, with spicy pimiento-style queso oozing from a black sesame brioche bun. District Donuts also prides itself on house-made ingredients, so you know it’s fresh.

Lunch Plans? It’s as good as it looks! Our contribution to this fabulous chicken sandwich city has been rolling for a few years and we call it The Rooster. It looks like this: Crispy fried chicken breast, buttermilk garlic slaw, candied jalapeño, spicy “pimento style“ queso, house made black sesame brioche bun. I realize it may sound cliche, but we make all this stuff in house – you can taste that!
The Company Burger
611 O’Keefe Avenue, New Orleans & 4600 Freret Street, New Orleans
Burgers mean serious business at popular burger joint The Company Burger. However, chicken lovers can also find a fried chicken sandwich on the menu. Chicken breast gets topped with cabbage, mayo and bread and butter pickles on a soft brioche bun. Company Burger also regularly hosts pop-ups and serves weekly specials, which recently featured a spicy chicken sandwich. Maybe chef Adam Biderman might make this one a permanent addition, fingers crossed.

This Metairie joint specializes in Vietnamese po-boys with staples like the Viet Fried Chicken Banh Mi. Banh Mi Boys also features a couple of off-menu specials with fried chicken to keep on your radar. The off-menu Flamin’ Hot N’ Spicy Chicken Sandwich is a spicy fried chicken patty with Flamin’ Hot breading topped with Kimchi mayo and shredded lettuces. Also, watch out for another off-menu special: Nashville Hot Chicken Sliders topped with Sambal Pickles & Kimchi Mayo on Sweet Hawaiian Roll.
Chubbie’s Fried Chicken
4850 General Meyer Avenue, New Orleans
It seems this chicken shack on the Westbank in Algiers has stood the test of time. The fried chicken at Chubbie’s comes marinated in a unique blend of spices and deep fried to golden perfection. The no-frills chicken sandwich won’t disappoint.
Of course, Raising Canes‘ chicken sandwich deserves an honorable mention. The homegrown fast-food chain tosses the fan favorite chicken tenders on a kaiser roll with lettuce, dripping with the iconic Cane’s sauce.
The chicken sandwich has been on Chick-fil-A’s menu for as long as we can remember. And FYI, Chick-fil-A appears to still be going strong with its supply of chicken sandwiches in the midst of the internet debate.
3501 Veterans Boulevard, Metairie
Locals have been freaking out since Shake Shack finally landed in the New Orleans-area. Aside from the popular burgers you can also grab Chick’n Shack to satisfy your cravings in the meantime.
And oh, we know, these spots are only to name a few! NOLA is home to everything good, especially when it comes to food.
