Here’s where to find free meals and supplies in New Orleans after Hurricane Ida

During the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, the City of New Orleans has set up a number of distribution sites for meals, supplies and cooling stations around the city. Additionally, some local restaurants announced free offerings for residents impacted by the storm. Many are donating perishables, produce, ice and other items to help those in need.

We gathered a list of free food and other resources available in New Orleans and surrounding areas. Check back for updates as we get them.

Rouses Markets free ice giveaway

Rouses Markets on Tchoupitoulas Street in New Orleans will provide free ice today. The ice can be picked up today, Thursday, September 2nd, starting at 11 a.m., while supplies last. Limit 1 per family.

Academy Sports + Outdoors in Covington giving free water

To aid in the hurricane relief effort, Academy Sports + Outdoors in Covington will offer free cases of 24-count bottled water to the public, while supplies last, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2.

Customers can look for the 18-wheeler parked in front of the stores to pick up their free case. The trucks only contain cases of water for this donation to the affected communities. No purchase necessary.

Winn Dixie in Gramercy giving away water and ice

Winn Dixie has brought in 3 18-wheeler trucks of ice and water for residents. Limit of 2 each per person. Available in the parking lot now until supplies run out.

St. Tammany distribution site

Point of Distribution at First Baptist Church Covington now open; ice, MREs & water available

Distribution site in Hahnville

The National Guard and GOHSEP have established a resource distribution site at the West Bank Bridge Park. The site will open at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 1. Ice, water and MREs will be provided.

Residents should turn onto River Road from I-10 and will be directed to the location. Do NOT use the levee to access the distribution site.

St. John Parish distribution sites

Distribution sites in St. John Parish will open Wednesday from noon until 5 p.m. at Wallace Fire Station and REGALA Gym. Tarps, waters and MRES will be distributed via drive-thru.

Jefferson Parish distribution sites

Water, ice, MRE, & tarps — available for #JeffersonParish residents at Alario Center and Shrine on Airline on Wednesday, Sept. 1. Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) says sites should be up and running by noon.

Water distribution at Esplanade Mall in Kenner by Macy’s starting at 8:30 a.m.

St. Bernard Parish distribution sites

St. Bernard Parish is distributing tarps off Palmisano Blvd behind public works. St. Bernard is also opening a cooling center at the Val Riess Multipurpose building. It will be open from 11 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Operation BBQ Relief

In the wake of Hurricane Ida, Operation BBQ Relief will serve the surrounding communities, providing hot barbecue meals daily until further notice at Tangi Academy at 43052 Yokum Road in Hammond.

Meal distribution launches on Wednesday, Sept. 1, until further notice. Lunch pickup is daily at 11 a.m., and dinner pickup will be daily at 4 p.m., available on a first come first serve basis.

If your organization, church, or school is in need of meals, please call the food hotline at 386-222-2756 (All meal orders need to be in increments of 50).  **Please note these are bulk meals and they do not supply clamshells or utensils.

All bulk meal orders need to be placed by 5 p.m. for the next day to be guaranteed. Any orders placed “day of” will be filled accordingly to capacity that is already on the books.

Salvation Army Meal Distribution

The Salvation Army has mobile feeding units ready to distribute meals to hardest-hit areas left in Ida’s wake. Visit the Salvation Army Facebook page for updates on feeding locations.

Friday, Sept. 3

AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana distributes relief supplies

AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana will distribute hurricane relief items at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 3. Supplies distributed include fans, diapers, mosquito repellant and laterns.

Hurricane relief center in St. Tammany Parish

Two free relief stations will offer meal boxes, water and charging stations at locations in St. Tammany Parish on Friday, Sept. 3.
