With the opening of a new kayak dock, Hopedale Marina is doing its part to become a kayak fishing destination.
Located one hour from downtown New Orleans, Hopedale Marina, now offers kayakers safe access and egress into some of South Louisiana’s best fishing waters.
After careful planning and years of consideration, the two months of construction on the two-slip kayak dock was completed in mid-July.
“The biggest challenge in getting this open and ready for use was the weather,’ Pat Turner, a representative from Hopedale Marina, said. “And as we got closer to completion, keeping the kayakers off of it, was just as challenging. Now we are ready to go,” Turner said.
The kayak dock features a system of rollers along with anti-slip decking which allows for a stress-free transition from land to water and from water to land. The entire act of launching takes only seconds. Once the kayak is positioned on the water, getting in and out is effortless – even for beginners. Roadside launches are not uncommon for kayak fishermen but many of the hazards that come with it are eliminated in the design of this kayak dock.
Along with the ease of use and improved safety, the biggest gain for kayakers and boaters alike is the alleviated congestion that comes from sharing the marina’s main boat launch. When the conditions were right, the marina served 30 to 40 kayakers at daybreak. With this investment, Hopedale Marina wants to serve even more kayakers and become a kayak destination.
“On some mornings, we could have a couple of hundred people using this boat launch. Having a safe place for kayakers to enter and exit is why we did this,” Turner said.
The cost of launching a kayak from Hopedale Marina is $5.
Hopedale Marina is a one-stop destination for fishermen. The marina sells everything you need for a successful fishing trip including ice, snacks, drinks and live bait. Hopedale Marina also offers boat shed rentals, cabin rentals, and has an RV campground.
