The inaugural House Fest aims to bring tacos and house music together for the first time in the greater New Orleans area at Lafreniere Park on Cinco de Mayo.
The free event, organized by Metairie Mexican street food restaurant Tacos Del Cartel, will include authentic Mexican cuisine, live music, face painting, DJs, bartender stage shows and masterclasses for margaritas, tequila and mezcal. Festivities will center around the Al Copeland Meadow Concert Stage.
Organizers say they hope to make House Fest an annual event.
“This will be the first event in the New Orleans area that brings tacos and house music together,” Tacos Del Cartel co-owner Julio Machado said. “House Fest is the start of an annual tradition that we hope will become a vital and impactful part of the community.”
Organizers also say COVID-19 safety protocols will be enforced at House Fest. Those safety measures include festival-goers wearing masks when they are not eating or drinking, ordering lines with six feet of distance between customers, 24 hand sanitizing stations and frequent cleaning of dining areas and restrooms.
“This event offers something for everyone,” Machado said. “The DJs will be a mix of local and international. We’ll have Birria tacos and charcoal steak tacos. We have Catrinas coming from Mexico. We’re very excited.”
House Fest takes place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5.
Lafreniere Park is located at 3000 Downs Boulevard in Metairie.
