After nearly 20 years, pirogue racing returns to the Town of Jean Lafitte on Saturday, July 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Jules Nunez Seafood Pavilion and AJ & Sheron Fabre Market.

Event organizer Tim Kerner, Jr. says he’s excited to bring back this “cultural staple” to the Lafitte area.

“Everyone who has lived on Bayou Barataria remembers the summer pirogue races from years ago,” Kerner said. “We thought it was such a great tradition.”

The pirogue races will run from noon to 3 p.m. with races in a dozen divisions. The event will also include local food, arts and crafts and music.

Kerner said attendees can “enjoy both new and old traditions” including a Cajun canoe builder demonstration and pirogue history lesson.

The Jules Nunez Seafood Pavilion and AJ & Sheron Fabre Market, 920 Jean Lafitte Blvd., Jean Lafitte, La., is located on Bayou Barataria, next to the public boat launch.

The event is free and open to the public.
