Krewe of House Floats announces return for Carnival 2022

Mayor Cantrell says it’s still too early to decide the fate of Carnival parades in 2022, but those house floats are coming back.

The Krewe of House Floats announced Friday plans to roll forward for Carnival 2022.

The organization says it will return “to help facilitate a safe celebration of Carnival by residents and visitors alike, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”

During its inaugural year, the Krewe of House Floats popped up with creative house floats based on dinosaurs, circus animals, Jazz Fest, Leah Chase and Big Freedia.

For 2022, the krewe announces the theme “Vaccinate, Decorate, Celebrate,” and the group says it’s currently looking to select this year’s grand marshal. The Krewe of House Floats will announce the 2022 grand marshall on Twelfth Night.

The krewe invites suggestions for the ideal grand marshal by using the hashtag #KoHFGrandMarshal on social media. Jan. 6 is also the day that the krewe encourages members to begin decorating their homes as floats.

“Even before we entered a period of uncertainty that Mardi Gras 2022 could be parade-less, we were already planning to continue,” Krewe of House Floats founder and New Orleans resident Megan Boudreaux said in a statement. “In a city that doesn’t let anything rain on its parade, it’s truly humbling to see how an idea that I posted to social media last year rapidly grew into an organization with thousands of members. It’s our hope to continue this annual tradition for many years to come. We are well-placed to help New Orleanians celebrate Mardi Gras safely.”

In 2020, Krewe of House Floats launched in response to parade cancellations due to the pandemic. The idea posted to social media to decorate houses in the style of parade floats rapidly grew into thousands of decorated homes for Carnival 2021.

Organizers say more than 2,600 homeowners registered their house floats in 2021 with more than 30 subkrewes organized by neighborhoods throughout the Greater New Orleans area. The group says it also raised more than $30,000 during Mardi Gras 2021 through a partnership with the Greater New Orleans Foundation to support workers impacted by parade cancellations.
