Looking for a Dong Phuong king cake? Here’s where to get one without going to New Orleans East

The lightly-sweet, super-flaky king cake from Dong Phuong Bakery, based in New Orleans East, has surged in popularity throughout the area — especially since winning a James Beard award in 2018.

Fans of the wildly-popular king cake can once again get their hands on the in-demand staple without travelling to New Orleans East. The bakery announced a list of businesses it will partner with as vendors to distribute king cakes around town this season.

Dong Phuong’s vendor list has expanded from 2019 and now includes nine New Orleans-area locations spanning from Covington to Gretna.

This year, Dong Phuong will distribute limited quantities of king cakes to the following locations: Zuppardo’s Family Supermarket in Metairie, Nesbit’s Poeyfarre Market in the Central Business District, Adams Street Grocery in Uptown, Pho Cong Noodles & Grill in Covington, Jeanfreau Market in Chalmette, Jazzy Pete’s Poboy in Slidell, Flavors Snowball in Kenner, Mr. Bubbles Sandwich House in Gretna and Amore Bakery and Cafe in Gretna.

While the vendor locations offer convenience for customers hoping to grab one of the hottest king cakes in New Orleans, you will pay slightly more for it.

King cake prices via the Dong Phuong website range from $17.10 to $19. However, when you purchase from a vendor the price tag ranges from about $25 to $29, according to some retailers.

Many of the retailers are first come, first served and will not accept pre-orders due to high demand and limited quantities. Some of the vendors, like Amore Bakery and Cafe in Gretna, will also limit how many king cakes customers can purchase at a time.

And with the demand for the popular item most likely skyrocketing even more during the season, president of Dong Phuong Bakeshop Linh Garza also warns customers of unauthorized resellers. Garza said the bakery has already noticed a few offenders.

“I would caution our customers from buying from these unauthorized resellers because we do not know when and where they are getting their supply,” Garza said.

One helpful tip for customers is to find out king cake delivery days and times from your nearest vendors in advance.

For example, Zuppardo’s Family Supermarket in Metairie receives deliveries between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., even on the weekends. Amore Bakery and Cafe is scheduled to get deliveries on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, but delivery times may vary.

A good rule is to call the retailer to find out availability in advance to avoid a blank trip.

Dong Phuong also sweetens the deal for customers willing to make the trek out to the New Orleans East home base. The bakery released a new flavor this year that customers can only purchase directly from the store: Almond Creme.

Linh said customers can also purchase king cakes online via the bakery’s website, but many of the shipping days have already filled up. Linh said all Mondays and Wednesdays are fully booked. The bakery recently opened Thursdays as a ship out day with Fedex Standard Overnight as the only shipping option.

In 2019, Dong Phuong was investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor and had to pay $127,128 in back wages to 43 employees to settle overtime and record-keeping violations, according to federal officials.

In 2018, the bakery suspended deliveries to retailers due to overwheming demand and reports of king cake scalping. That same year, the James Beard Foundation honored Dong Phuong with it’s America’s Classics Award.

Dong Phuong started creating its iconic king cakes in 2008, known for its brioche dough with scalloped edges and cream cheese-based icing.

Owner Huong Tran and her husband immigrated to New Orleans from Vietnam and established the bakery more than 30 years ago.
