Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo announces dates for modified event in May

Organizers for the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo announced new dates for the popular neighborhood festival, but the event is coming back quite different than in years past.

Friends of Bayou St. John, the non-profit organization that puts on the annual event, will host a modified version of the festival called “Boogaloo in Exile” at two different locations from May 14 to May 16.

This year, the festival will move its party away from the banks of Bayou St. John to the Broadside, the Broad Theater’s outdoor venue, for two days of performances on May 15 and May 16. Organizers will also host a patron party for Friends of Bayou St. John members at the Funky Uncle on May 14.

“If there is one thing we’ve learned in the past year, it’s the value of our outdoor spaces and natural environments,” said Jared Zeller, founder of the Friends of Bayou St. John and the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo. “Bayou St. John has been a true refuge throughout the pandemic, providing much-needed outdoor recreation, beauty and space to breathe.”

The North Mississippi Allstars will perform at the Friends of Bayou St. John patron party with a cap of 50 tickets for the special members-only show from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on May 14. Organizers say the show will also be live-streamed for free.

Recent Grammy Award-winning band the New Orleans Nightcrawlers and the 101 Runners will perform at the Broadside from 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on May 15. Grammy nominees Tank & The Bangas and Cha Wa are scheduled to take the stage at the Broadside from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on May 16.

Both shows at the Broadside will offer free access to an art market for the duration of the event.
