Need to return a gift? Here’s your favorite retailers’ holiday return policies

Many people hate dealing with the hassle of holiday return policies after opening gifts that just didn’t work out.

Most major retailers offer a pretty gracious holiday return period. However, keeping up with the various deadlines of holiday return policies can get pretty tricky.

So your favorite aunt just doesn’t get your style, or your mom decided to buy you a shirt that would have fit…last year. Don’t feel guilty, but you should return the item before time runs out.

Here’s what you need to know about holiday return policies from many major retailers.

Walmart has varying rules under its holiday return policy. Some orders placed between Oct. 28 and Dec. 25 will have an extended holiday return time frame, according to

  • If an item has a 15 or 30 day return policy, Walmart extends the return time so that it doesn’t start until Dec. 26.
  • The 90 day return window on items remains the same, the 90 days starts on the day delivered or picked up.

Some items falling under a 15-day return window include computers, digital music players, drones and tablets. These items can be returned until Jan. 10.

If your purchase falls in the 30-day return window, you can bring it back until Jan. 25.


Most unopened items sold by Target in new condition and returned within 90 days will receive a refund or exchange, according to

  • All electronics and entertainment items must be returned within 30 days for a refund or exchange. For these items purchased between Nov. 1 to Dec. 25, the 30-day refund period will start on Dec. 26.
  • All Apple products, excluding mobile phones, must be returned within 15 days. For these items purchased between Nov. 1 to Dec. 25, the 15-day refund period will start on Dec. 26.

Macy’s accepts many merchandise returns within 180 days of purchase, according to their website. Some exceptions include Last Act items, which must be returned within 30 days. Other items like Apple products, area rugs and some designer brands generally must be returned within 14 to 30 days of purchase depending on the category.

During the holidays, Macy’s also has a special holiday return policy for many items purchased between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31. Those items will have an extended return time frame ending on Jan. 31.

Best Buy

Best Buy allows returns through Jan. 12 on almost every purchase made throughout November and December.

“Purchases made between October 28–December 28, 2018, have an extended return period through January 12, 2019, excluding cell phones, devices that can be activated, and AppleCare monthly plans. All other terms and conditions of our Return & Exchange Promise apply,” according to Best

My Best Buy Elite members get an extension on holiday returns until Jan. 27, for items purchased between Oct. 28 and Dec. 28. Elite Plus can return items through Feb. 11.

Kohl’s overall returns policy is “hassle-free” with no deadline for most merchandise, except on premium electronics.

According to the Kohl’s website:

“With an original receipt, you’ll get a refund or even exchange. If you paid with a check, you may get a merchandise credit, cash or a corporate refund. With a gift receipt, you’ll get an even exchange of a merchandise credit.”

Premium electronics typically have a 30 day return policy. However, the store extends the policy for holiday season: “Premium electronics purchased from Nov. 1 to Dec. 25 may be returned by Jan. 31 with original packaging and a valid receipt or account look-up,” according to the website.

According to the holiday return policy via, you’ll have until Jan. 31 to return items shipped between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31 for a full refund.

However, this policy is subject to Amazon’s other return guidelines, including third-party seller rules. Head to Amazon’s site for a complete listing of guidelines.

Apple says you have until Jan. 8 to return items according to its holiday return policy. This applies to items purchased at the Apple online store and received between Nov. 14 and Dec. 25. All purchases made after December 25, 2018 are subject to Apple’s standard return policy.

Apple notes that there are other terms and conditions that may apply to these items.

While JCPenney doesn’t list a specific holiday return policy, items purchased at JCPenney are eligible for return 45 days with no receipt; 30 days for appliances, electronics and furniture and 60 days for jewelry. If you have a gift receipt, items are eligible for exchange or refund at the gift receipt price in the form of a jcp gift card.

Valid photo identification is required for all non-receipted returns or exchanges.
