New Orleans Restaurants and Chefs Win Big at 2017 James Beard Awards

Zach Engel of Shaya won Rising Star Chef of the Year.

New Orleans was not only well represented at the 2017 James Beard Foundation Awards.  Some of the city’s top restaurants and chefs took home hardware as well.

Herbsaint‘s chef de cuisine Rebecca Wilcomb was named Best Chef: South. Herbsaint is a member of the restaurant group headed by Donald Link and regularly appears on the best of restaurants lists from multiple publications.  Wilcomb began her career at Herbsaint as a line cook and worked her way up to her current position.

Arnaud’s French 75 Bar was tabbed the Outstanding Bar Program.  French 75 is headed by bartender Chris Hannah, one of the top contributors to the mixed drink scene in the city.

Zachary Engel, chef de cuisine at Shaya Restaurant, took home the award for Rising Star Chef of the Year.  Like Wilcomb, Engel worked his way up from “the very bottom” to eventually head up Shaya’s kitchen operation.  This is the second straight year the restaurant has won a Beard Award.

The James Beard Foundation Award for Excellence recognizes outstanding chefs, restaurants and bars. The foundation also gives awards for food-related books, food media and journalism.

The foundation announced its winners at the 2017 James Beard Awards Gala in Chicago.
