The team behind the James Beard Award-winning bar Cure will soon open a new, casual neighboorhood restaurant and bar called Vals on Freret Street this spring.
The new spot, at 4632 Freret Street, aims to be a true neighborhood spot and will feature traditional and regional Mexican-inspired cuisine with an emphasis on agave spirits.
Vals will be located just up the street from Cure. The restaurant will be complete with outdoor seating, a lively bar and a laid-back indoor dining space — a concept drawn up from partners Neal Bodenheimer, Matthew Kohnke, Turk Dietrich and Chef Fredo Nogueria.
The existing location, corner of Valence and Freret, was once home to a historic gas station and will now be re-purposed as a casual space to dine.

“Vals” received its name after being discovered on the wall of the space as Kohnke and his team were peeling paint, and removing panels in the building.
Between tacos and tostadas to ceviches and more, guests will be able to pair tasty selections with carefully crafted cocktails.
Vals’ resident agave expert and bar manager, Alex Anderson, has spent years crafting cocktails at Cure. Chef and partner Fredo Nogueria of Cane & Table and Cure, will design the menu.
Bodenheimer, Kohnke, Dietrich and Nogueria say the vision has been five years in the making.
Vals is projected to open in spring 2020.
