Nola Nyxettes dance troupe hosts dance clinic, auditions June 9 & 10

If you’ve ever wanted to join a Mardi Gras dance group, a popular local troupe looks to beef up its squad.

The Nola Nyxettes dance troupe will host a dance clinic auditions on June 9 and June 10, according to a release. Auditions are open to women ages 21 or older.

The Nyxettes say they hope the auditions help to “form a new squad of women who will sashay down St. Charles Avenue during six Mardi Gras parades in 2019,” according to the release.

“The Nyxette’s signature top hats and tails bring an element of New York-style dancing to Mardi Gras, which has made the Nyxettes one of the premier dance troupes during Mardi Gras,” Julie Lea, Nyxettes director and Krewe of Nyx captain, said. “The Nyxettes have become an integral extension of our sisterhood and represent the Krewe at events throughout the year,” Lea said.

The group will hold a clinic to teach a dance routine from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 9 at the Hilton Riverside Chart Ballroom. Auditions will follow on Sunday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Harrah’s Casino, Fulton Street Room 1. Dancers must attend the clinic on Saturday to learn the featured number before auditioning on Sunday. The 2018-2019 squad will be chosen on site.

Women may bring mirrors, makeup and hairstyling essentials to prepare for auditions. Participants are asked to come performance-ready to try out with hair and makeup complete when auditions begin.

The Nola Nyxettes were founded in 2012 and made their debut at the Krewe of Nyx Ball on during the 2014 Carnival season. The team marches in several carnival parades during the season including Freret, King Arthur, Nyx, Iris, Thoth, and Zulu. The group has also performed at several Pelicans pre-game shows, numerous community parades and several Mardi Gras balls.
