Seven Tips For Kickin’ Your Bad Habits To The Curb

If the excitement of “New Year, New Me!!!” hasn’t worn off yet…well, it’s probably about to soon. The first few weeks of sticking to a resolution aren’t necessarily easy, but after the novelty of the new year wears off, sticking to those resolutions can be tough, man!

If you need a little extra guidance in sticking to your goals, we feel that. Here are some tips for kickin’ some of those bad habits to the curb FOR REAL this time!


  1. Dream big, but be realistic. Having a lofty goal might seem real impressive at first…until you find yourself frustrated trying to achieve the impossible. Ease yourself into a big goal with smaller milestones and stepping stones!
  2. If you do slip up, forgive yourself. Nobody’s perfect, and we all make mistakes. When you fall off the horse, hop back on – more determined than ever!

    Get into shape with a group to stay motivated and on track! A group of 100 runners is the ultimate support team.

    Get a support team. Whether it’s family members, sorority sisters, teammates, or a close friend, having someone to cheer you on can make a huge difference in your determination and mental health. For example, if you’re aiming to become more active this year, try exercising with a Group X class or at a community group fun-run. This support team will hold you accountable!

  4. Reward yourself. Every time you reach a specific milestone or goal, reward yourself! Trying to lose 20 pounds? Each time you lose five, buy some new workout clothes – YOU EARNED THEM! Rewarding yourself is the best way to stay motivated while trying to better yourself.
  5. Cheating is OK. Trying to eat clean in 2017? That’s awesome. But to avoid any slip-ups, treat yo’ self with a cheat meal every once in a while – and don’t feel bad about it!
  6. Figure out your “triggers” and get them out of your life. Once you figure out what’s causing you to struggle with your bad habit, breaking that habit can becomes much easier. For example, if you find yourself spending too much money on a credit card, carry cash to avoid mindlessly swiping at the check-out. Or, if you’re binging on too much Davinici’s pizza after 2 a.m., watch how much alcohol you’re drinking throughout the night and head home a little earlier than you’re used to!
  7. Replace your bad habit with a good one. Ever seen the movie Holes with Shia LaBeouf? In this timeless classic, we see Mr. Sir break his smoking habit by swapping cigarettes with sunflower seeds. Now, smoking might not be your vice and sunflower seeds may not be your thing, but you get the picture. Replace your bad habits with some good (swap processed sugary treats with homemade chia seed pudding, video games with a community sports league, etc.) to keep those bad habits at bay.
