Sno-ball season is alive and well, with many people already lining up at stands around the area. However, some sno-ball lovers trying to work on their summer bodies may also be watching their calorie count. We're here to help with some sugar-free sno-ball options that are perfect for those who want to indulge without the guilt.
Hansen's Sno Bliz
Out-the-door lines usually greet those who wish to partake in this local legend, but the wait is definitely worthwhile. Hansen’s is known for the flavorful syrups using homemade secret recipes of founding matriarch Mary Hansen. However, the spot also has sugar-free flavors for the diet-conscious customer. Some of their most popular sugar-free flavors include cream of strawberry, cream of wedding cake and tart satsuma. Manager Paul Broussard says their sugar-free varieties are pretty good. “We make sure they taste good with the sugar-free syrup we use,” Broussard said.
Many locals gravitate toward this Mid-City spot for the super soft ice. You can also try out Pandora’s sugar-free flavors if you want to watch your figure. Some of their popular sugar-free syrups include wedding cake, strawberry, ice cream and chocolate. Owner Nick Pizzalato says he’s gotten a pretty good response from customers. “The customers say they’re the best sugar-free’s in the city,” Pizzalato said.
The Big Chill Snowballs and Ice Cream
We might have stumbled on the mecca of sugar-free snowballs in the metro area. Head to The Big Chill in Metairie for a really great offering of low-calorie options. The stand offers more than 20 sugar-free flavors, as well as no sugar added cream flavors. If you’re looking for something a little tastier, try out their extreme real fruit, no sugar added flavors. Customers seem to like guanabana and strawberry — their most popular extreme flavors. The Big Chill says their most popular regular sugar-free flavors are chocolate and wedding cake. The most popular no sugar added cream flavor is nectar. They also offer no sugar added soft serve to stuff your sno-ball. We reached out to Carolyn Sullivan Martinez at The Big Chill. “We have been known for our great selection of sugar-free for almost 26 years,” Martinez said.
Plum Street Snowballs
Many consider getting a sno-ball at popular Uptown spot Plum Street Snowballs a treasured New Orleans experience. However, they also have a treat for people trying to get their bodies ready for summer. The stand’s popular sugar-free flavors are pink lemonade, wild strawberry and chocolate. Shift manager Kirklynn Brehm says their pink lemonade flavor is actually very refreshing. “You almost can’t tell they’re sugar-free,” Brehm said.
Lou Lou's Snoballs & Ice Cream
Lou Lou’s Snoballs & Ice Cream owner Lindsay Saddemi says customers love their sugar-free flavors. The Metairie stand served king cake cream sno-balls with slice of king cake on top during Carnival. However, if you’re trying to watch your figure, Lou Lou’s has a few stand-out sugar-free flavors. Saddemi says wedding cake and ice cream sell the most, while strawberry and raspberry follow in popularity.
