Veterans Day 2019: Local events, freebies to honor our country’s heroes

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11. From restaurant freebies to local events, there are plenty of ways to say thank you to our brave men and women.

Many restaurants are offering discounts, free meals or other goodies on Veterans Day. Plus, local celebrations and parades around town will also champion our country’s heroes. We have it all mapped out here. Share this list with the soldier in your life.

Free meals and treats for veterans

Before you go to any of these locations, call ahead to make sure the restaurant or retail location in your area is honoring these deals, as listed on

Academy Sports + Outdoors: Veterans, active-duty service members and their immediate family members get 10% off their entire purchase in-store and online from October 27 through November 11.

AMC Theatres: AMC Stubs Members with a valid military I.D. can receive a free large popcorn from Nov. 8 to Nov. 11 at participating theaters. This special offer is available to active duty service members and veterans who purchase a military priced ticket using their AMC Stubs membership. service members are eligible for a Military Discount when they show a valid military I.D. at the box office. Applebee’s: Applebee’s has a tradition of offering veterans and active duty military a free meal on Nov. 11. The restaurant continues the tradition this year. Dine-in only. Visit Applebee’s website for details.

BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse: Veterans get a complimentary entree priced up to $14.95 plus a Dr. Pepper with military I.D. or other proof of service. Valid for dine-in only. See details.

Buffalo Wild Wings: Veterans and active-duty service members get a free order of small boneless or traditional wings with a side of fries when they dine in at participating locations.

Chili’s: All Veterans and active-duty military personnel can get a free meal on Veteran’s Day Monday, November 11, 2019, at all participating Chili’s Grill and Bar restaurants. Cici’s Pizza: All active duty or retired military with a valid military ID are being offered a free pizza buffet on Nov. 11. Please call ahead to your local Cicis Pizza if you have any questions about your Veteran’s Day Discount.

Cracker Barrel: Veterans get a complimentary slice of Double Chocolate Fudge Coca-Cola Cake or a Pumpkin Pie Latte on Nov. 11.

Dave & Buster’s: Military and first-responders get 20 percent off food and game-play for themselves and up to four guests. The offer excludes games on Wednesdays.

Dunkin’ Donuts: On Nov. 11, veterans and active duty military can receive a free donut at participating Dunkin’ locations, no purchase necessary.

Fogo de Chao: Veterans and active-duty personnel can take 50 percent off their entire meal over Veterans Day weekend, from Nov. 8 through Nov. 11. Please call ahead to see if your local location is participating.

Golden Corral: Military Veterans, retirees, and active-duty members are being offered a free sit-in “thank you” dinner on Monday, November 11, 2019, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more details visit the Golden Corral website.

Gordon Biersch: Active duty service members and veterans can score a free entree from a special menu with proof of service. The menu includes choices like a seven-ounce top sirloin, beer-battered fish & chips, Cajun pasta, or the Märzen BBQ burger. Eligible guests should come in uniform or bring military ID to get the free meal.

Hooters: Veterans and active-duty military with military I.D. or other proof of service can enjoy a free entree from a special Veterans Day menu with a purchase of a beverage.

IHOP: All Active duty and Retired Veterans in observance of Veteran’s Day, November 11, are invited to come into IHOP and enjoy a “free” breakfast. Visit the IHOP website for details.

Olive Garden: Veterans and active-duty service members can dine on a free entree with unlimited soup or salad and garlic breadsticks at participating locations.

Starbucks: Veterans get a free tall coffee on November 11.

Subway: Military Veterans with a valid ID are being offered a free six-inch sub on November 11 at select locations. Call or visit your nearest location for details.

Target: Military personnel, veterans and their families can get a 10% discount on one purchase in-store or online.

TCBY: Veterans and active military personnel get their first 6 oz. of frozen yogurt for free on November 11 with valid proof of service at participating locations.

Texas Road House: Veterans and active military receive a free lunch on November 11, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at all Texas Roadhouse locations. Visit the Texas Road House website for details.

TGI Fridays: Military guests with a valid military ID will be treated to a free lunch menu item up to $12 on November 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call your local TGI Fridays for details.

Zoe’s Kitchen: Active military and veterans will be treated to 10 percent off with valid I.D. Call your nearest location for details.

Local Veterans Day Events

National WWII Museum: The museum hosts its annual Veterans Day at the Museum celebration on Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The ceremony and related programming are free and open to the public and all veterans are invited to attend. Events include a performance by the American Legion Band Performance and a Veterans Day commemoration ceremony. In addition, veterans will receive a free Museum Campus Pass to tour our exhibit galleries.

Lakeview Veterans Day Parade: The fifth annual Lakeview Veterans’ Day Parade rolls on Saturday, Nov. 9 starting at 11 a.m. The route starts at W. Harrison Avenue and Fleur De Lis Drive. The parade will proceed onto Harrison Avenue, go up to Argonne Boulevard and loop around back down Harrison Avenue. The parade will turn right on Vicksburg Street and proceed to the St. Dominic Schoolyard. See the route and more info at the website.

Jefferson Parish Veterans Day Ceremony: Jefferson Parish officials will honor America’s veterans during a ceremony at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7. The event takes place at Lakeside Mall, under the Veterans Sky Light between J. Crew and Express stores. The program will include the Marine Corps Band New Orleans and comments from several guest speakers. Food and light refreshments following the ceremony.

St. Bernard Parish Veterans Day Parade and Recognition Ceremony: St. Bernard Parish officials invites the public to the annual Veterans’ Day Parade and Recognition Ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 9. Veterans from all branches of the military are invited to be recognized in this year’s ceremony and to ride in the parade. The parade will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the corner of Old Hickory Avenue and Judge Perez Drive. The route will travel west on Judge Perez Drive and end at the Frederick Sigur Civic Center. Flags will be distributed along the parade route to be waived in the celebration.

City of Gretna’s 2019 Veterans Day Celebration: The City of Gretna hosts a Veterans Day Celebration at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11 at the Gretna Market. Patriotic music begins at 6:30 p.m. by the Marine Forces Reserve Band. Refreshments will be served.
