WWOZ brodcasting archived Irma Thomas performances on Mother’s Day

A long-standing Mother’s Day tradition with the “Soul Queen of New Orleans” gets a virtual twist this year.

Local radio station WWOZ announced it will broadcast archived performances from Irma Thomas on Sunday to go along with your Mother’s Day brunch at home.

For more than three decades, Irma Thomas headlined the annual Mother’s Day celebration at Audubon Zoo. The annual concert features Thomas singing old favorites, new hits and tributes to moms in the audience during the emotion-filled performance.

This Sunday would have marked the 37th anniversary of the popular event, which cannot take place due to COVID-19.

In response, WWOZ has chosen to still celebrate with the archived concert “to keep up the longstanding tradition for all the moms out there.

You can tune in to this special set from the “Soul Queen of New Orleans” with your mom from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 10. Listen to the broadcast wherever you are via this link.
